Test the Downside Case

A financing plan should work under more than one forecast.

Prepare a base case using reasonable revenue and utilization assumptions. Then prepare a downside case that includes lower usage, delayed customer payments, price pressure, repairs, or a slower ramp-up period.

Ask whether the business can still make payments if:

  • The equipment generates revenue later than expected

  • Utilization is below projections

  • A key customer reduces its orders

  • Operating costs increase

  • The asset requires an unplanned repair

  • The business needs additional working capital

Equipment financing should support operations rather than weaken them.

Preserve adequate liquidity after closing. The business should retain enough cash to manage normal operating expenses, timing differences in receivables, inventory needs, and unexpected costs. The appropriate reserve depends on the industry, revenue stability, and operating model.

Also consider how the new obligation will affect future financing. Lenders may review debt service coverage, leverage, collateral, guarantor strength, and covenant compliance.
